This adventure is unique and we like the pixelated artstyle. We love all three stories, each one special and not similar to the others. We made it through and are very proud of it. Congratulations to this wonderful and sometimes spooky work!

Absolute amazing game. The details, the retro graphic and also the story hooked me from minute 1. Can't wait to see more from the developer! Not convinced? Try out for yourself or take a peek at the gameplay:

amazing amazing amazing game... can't wait to see more games by you!

Fantastic piece of storytelling, graphics and animation are great as well. I really liked isometric view which is not very common for a point & click game.  Thank You and keeping my fingers crossed for another game in similar vein.

very much enjoyed, loved the graphics and the style of narrative. Interesting game

This game is fantastic, the best way I can describe it:

Boy, that escalated quickly

(Purchased w/DLC on Steam)

This is such a gem of digital storytelling! Don't go into this expecting a point-and-click adventure game, because this is not a puzzle adventure in the vein of Thimbleweed Park or the LucasArts classics. Rather, this is an "on-the-rails" anthology with a point-and-click interface. You're here for the story, not for the gameplay.

And what a tale! The anthology consists of the backstory for 3 strangers on a train that they have no recollection of boarding. Each story is presented in a different way, leveraging a variety of storytelling techniques. Each is well paced and at times very creative in the reveal of key plot elements. The author has achieved a perfect balance in the storytelling. They don't spell everything out for the viewer, instead letting the viewer discover for themselves what is going on. At the same time, the author is never overly oblique, nor do they presume to try for clever plot twists. The brilliance of the design is that even as you come to realize where the story is going, there is still a powerful impact when a key plot point is reached.

[MINOR SPOILERS?] This is especially felt in Acts 2 and 3, both of which, compared to Act 1, contain a great deal of character backstory reveal. In Act 2, even as I came to the dreadful realization of what Lady Winterbourne would discover in the pond, I still clenched in agony when it was finally revealed. In Act 3, even though I knew full well what Dr. Samuels was going to do for the wounded soldier who lost his legs, I still jumped at the moment when… well, best not to reveal everything.

The fact that the game could evoke such a strong emotional responses, without being excessively cagey with the plot exposition, speaks to an impressive storytelling finesse and a proper respect for the intellectual and emotional potential of the viewer. Few games can claim such insightful design.

The entire interactive story goes quickly, lasting only 2 to 3 hours depending on whether you get hung up on any of the sparse puzzles that it presents. (Also, depending on how long you spend listening to Lady Winterbourne's vinyls. I for one thoroughly enjoyed listening all the way through each one while enjoying her spontaneous dancing. Scandalous!) The game focuses on quality over quantity, and those few hours are time well spent.

Wait I'm a bit lost on the ending

This game is absolutely extraordinary.

This game is a masterpiece. You should be incredibly proud.

MAKE MORE!!!

Thank you so much, I absolutely loved it!

(+1)

Hello, I played this game and I really enjoyed it, great job! :)

(+2)

this was an amazing little game, thank you!

(+4)

You guys have my entire heart as developers. Beautiful, engaging, artistic, and just overall well written and well made. It was such a pleasure to play this game and I can't wait for the next masterpiece you create. Feel free to check out part two of my playthrough below.

Hi!
Is there any way to translate the game into Hungarian? Me and some of my friends would make it, but we don't know how to do it exactly

(+2)

One of the best games I've ever played! So much work and effort put into this! Mad respect!

i read that this game works in SCUMMVM, thats great.  i should test this.

any plans to update the AGS engine when the SDL2 update comes out?
the SDL2 moves away from Allegro backend and fixes several issues
i hope you do testing for this an release a SDL2 update

also, two of your included sound records:

it would be nice to change these songs or replace them with CreativeCommons recor

This was so gorgeous and devastating. I didn't mind the pacing and finished it faster than I expected. The slow build up of dread was really artful and heartbreaking, but there was enough levity not to make it a slog or painful.

(+1)

wow. words can't describe the effort that was clearly put into this game. the storytelling, the animations, chef's kiss. magnificent and eery.

(+2)

It was really an awsome game, thanks ! Loved it !

MAGNIFICENT game!

Had an absolute BLAST playing through this game, enjoying the story, the puzzles, the music, absolutely amazing beautiful game! Made 3 videos over the last few weeks on it, just gonna post episode 1 as to not take up a bunch of space with videos, but I hope you enjoy it/them!

Absolutely beautiful game. Thank you, Laura and Thomas.

Btw, perhaps it might be of interest to you – I managed to get it running on a jailbroken iPhone/iPad via the latest version of ScummVM (2.5.0), which means that the game should most probably work on Android, too.

However, there seems to be a problem with the text display during some scenes (screenshot attached), probably due to some hitch in ScummVM's implementation of the AGS engine. Hopefully, it will be fixed in the next ScummVM update.  🤓

(+1)

Thank you! That's an interesting screenshot, hahah. The thing is that AGS always displays speech on top of everything else, including GUIs, objects, overlays, etc, so my guess is that ScummVM treats speech as just another overlay and the layer hierarchy got screwed up here for whatever reason. But it's just a wild guess!

And yes, it does work on Android, more or less. I was able to run it on my phone using the default Android launcher which comes as an optional download with every engine release, but unfortunately, when it came to the part where you have to enter the correct time for the clock, the keyboard would not pop up, making it impossible to finish the game. Apparently this was a known issue back then and I did not look further into it because I was just testing it out of curiosity and had no intention of launching an Android version, so I'm not sure what the state of things is right now in this regard.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words and glad you enjoyed it!

Un arte magnificó, impecable, maravilloso; el apartado estético es algo completamente fuera de lo común. Tengo ganas de saber que será lo próximo de la creadora.

Four Travellers is as beautiful as it is dark. It's a point and click game but it's an interactive story, not an adventure game. A tragic tale, wonderfully told and presented in gorgeous pixel art.

trop sympa !

Yes... So much yes...

Its rare to see a game as character driven as this one, and even rarer to see one succeed like this one. Not to spoil anything, but it made me feel what it wanted me to feel, but also allowed room for thought. One part made me queasy, to which I say good work. The game-play may have been a seemingly simplistic point and click, but it did a lot with that, helping me get into a character's mind. I haven't even talked abut the art and animation. Like everything else, does a lot with a little, and is simple beautiful.

My only gripes is that some puzzles were a bit confusing, and walking scenes and a few repeated animations were a bit too slow. (But lets be real, I'm a bit of an impatient moron.)

But that's it. This game is fucking amazing. Laura, If you're reading this, you did fucking amazing. Anybody else, go play this game. This is how you tell a story with a game.

(+3)

This game literally is an aesthetic masterpiece. The visuals, the music, the writing... I'm so blown away.  I am in love with your art and how you've chosen to share it. I've only finished the first two acts and both of them have taken my breath away. I'm so excited to finish the game and I eagerly wait in anticipation for whatever project you will work on next.

I've included the link for my playthrough of the first two acts. If it interests you, please feel free to take a look. 😊

Thank you! Glad to see you enjoyed it as much as In The Pines :)

(+3)

This is a really unique and enjoyable game. Thank you so much for making it; it reminded me of the portmanteau horror films of Amicus, to which I'm quite partial. Had fun playing it on Twitch!

Dr Terror's House of Horrors was actually an inspiration for us! Very happy you liked it :)

Wow, that's really awesome!

(+1)

I love this game so much that I made a part 2 video

Incredible game, very well thought through and didn't feel frustrating to play at all, all the puzzles and clues took the perfect amount of time and overall looked really good

(+1)

This game was stunning and I loved every minute of it!! I hope to see more from you!! I made a video on part 1 below, if you are interested!!!

Hello friend, I really liked your game, but there is a small problem .. Me and many other people who play this game do not know English at a sufficient level to translate phrases right during the game .. So.  Will there be localization into other languages, including Russian?  A lot of people want to play this, but not knowing the English language pushes people away from playing the game.  Could help with a reliable translation of the replicas in which case.

the game itself is incredible although the walk speed is really slow for me, would be nice to have an option to increase the walk speed

(+2)

My friend and I have played through the first two acts so far and have been immediately hooked. This game is incredibly gorgeous and has some of the most detailed, most beautiful pixel art I've ever seen.  If you have a Ko-fi or any other place where we could make a donation, I'd love to tip you guys for this fantastic experience.

The fact that this game doesn't shy away from real-world events and societal mindsets regarding things like period-typical homophobia, racism, and treatment of mental illness is a really bold move that I feel a lot of horror-based games don't tap into. It grounds the game very heavily in reality despite the supernatural elements and really makes you care about these characters we're playing as.

Overall, an excellent experience like I said before. I cannot wait for the Steam version to release so I can go for achievements and check out the DLC. I hope you guys get all the recognition you deserve for all the hard work you put into this game.

Any chance this will go on steam?

(+3)

Good news! Laura Hunt just posted on Twitter that the game is being released for Steam on September 21st of this year!

(+3)

I've loved this game so much I replayed it twice in a night!! Can't wait for your next game <: if you have a kofi or something please link it so I can properly compensate you for this masterpiece!

(+2)

Thank you! If you don't mind waiting a few days, next Tuesday (September 21st) we will make a pay-what-you-want DLC available containing the game's art book and original score so that people can donate but also get a little something extra for it. You can check out all the details here :) https://laurahunt.itch.io/if-on-a-winters-night-four-travelers/devlog/280174/dlc...

Awesome, I'm looking forward to it!!! <: Super excited to see the new content! I'm excited to play your other games and am REALLY looking forward to anything else you make!! You have a fan in me haha

(+2)

very good game, I liked it a lot. I would like that perhaps in the future, the game can have a Spanish translation, since my English is not very good, and that is why I do not learn much about the story.
