Hello, I am a student of multimedia design. Since I saw your work, I have been deeply attracted. I am very curious about what software you used to make this game. I want to learn from you,now this has become my motivation for learning, and your work really brought me a big change (English is not my mother tongue, some of it is translated, please forgive me if I make a mistake)
It's a great choice if you want to make simple point-and-click games, but it's also very old and has many limitations compared to more modern engines (such as lack of support for Unicode, so it's pretty much impossible to make games in Chinese with it, for example). It is free in any case, so you could always give it a try and see if it suits your needs :)
During the epidemic, I felt that I had no goals and motivation. And now I decided to study AGS and other programs I should have learned,I have a goal in life again.I wish I can make works that are as touching as you in the future, thank you again.(≧ω≦)/
This has got to be one of the most beautiful story-driven games I've ever seen! Only been able to watch through YouTube playthroughs, but if it ever comes out for the Mac, I'd be ever so grateful.
There will be a Mac build coming right here to itch.io around late September, so keep your eyes peeled! Or if you want a reminder, you could wishlist it on Steam (even though it will only be available for Win and Linux there) and as soon as it's released you will get an email letting you know it's available already, since we plan to release both at the same time: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1603980/
Finally got a chance to play this since I heard about it over on the facebook adventure gamers group...holy cow am I impressed with what you did in AGS. I have to say it was one of the most impressive uses of the engine. Not even Wadjet Studios come close even with their latest game.
Such an intriguing concept and parts hit so hard to home. Beautiful work. I look forward to seeing what else comes from this. :)
This game is amazing, everything about it is great, art, music, writing, references, etc. Personally, I liked the second story the most, but they are all very good.
The only negative point for me is that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the item you have to interact with from the scenario (eg the clock key)
Amazing game. Beautiful soundtrack, incredibly well-crafted atmosphere, engaging story. All the acts were tragic in their own ways. Did not expect to be sad at a horror-themed game. 11/10
The only issue I experienced was that the fullscreen toggle wasn't working on my PC. It did not ruin the experience for me though.
As to the fullscreen toggle issue, were you playing on Windows with the default configuration? If that's the case, would you mind following a couple of troubleshooting steps to see if we can spot the problem?
- Run winsetup.exe, tick the "Run in windowed mode" box, and click "Save and run". The game should start in a window; see if you can toggle now between windowed and fullscreen modes using Alt+Enter (don't press them both at the same time: try pressing Alt, and while keeping it pressed, press Enter.)
- If this does not work, quit the game and run winsetup once more. Untick the windowed mode box again, select the OpenGL graphics driver, and "Save and run". Does the toggle work now?
You're sick in the very best of ways. Thanks for providing this. I'm looking forward to pay some bucks as soon as you accept them on Steam. (I hope you'll add Linux there, too.)
Unfortunately, right now the chance of providing a Linux build for Steam seems very unlikely, but we'll try to make it happen so we're not completely discarding the possibility yet. We just don't want to make any promises in that regard in case it doesn't work out in the end.
In any case, the DLC will also be available here on itch.io on a pay-what-you-want basis, and it's definitely the option we would encourage taking because the cut Steam takes from every sale is pretty savage.
Thank you for your comment and the support, we really appreciate it.
The problem was setting the appropriate file permissions for the Linux executables. I don't have a Linux machine, but I do have a tiny command line application for Windows that can set the executable bit for the appropriate files and pack the build into a tar.gz archive, thus preserving these permissions. But while Itch.io supports uploading tar.gz files, Steam doesn't; it's either direct upload or zip files.
What changed things is that recently I was given a macbook at my job, and because macOS is built on Unix, I was able to set all correct permissions there and upload my files directly from that laptop. It was a bit complicated to set up at first, but now it's running like a charm.
I was playing through the game and it was amazing, honestly, the visuals, music, and storytelling mixed together in a beautiful way.
But when the game was about to end my character got stuck in the terrain, the game was saved and now I have no way to end the game other than starting over, this is unacceptable and gives me an overall bad impression. of the game.
My character got stuck in the third chapter while crossing the bridge that broke.
I suppose that if this problem does not occur to you, you can enjoy the game, although sometimes your character walks at the same pace as a crippled turtle i must say...
I really dont know what to say, its a polished, stylish, elegant, beautiful game, but right now im too angry at it to say i like it.
AMAZING GAME! I've been loving this game so far and I can't wait to play more of it! I have started a small series splitting the game in 4 acts and this is the first one! Thank you so much for this amazing work of art and I can't wait to see what else you can create!
Hey! I'll keep posting the video links for the next chapters in the replies of my original comment if anyone would like to see them! Thanks for he great game again!
This is it! The last part of If On A Winter's Night Four Travellers! This one will reveal everything and let me tell ya, you won't believe what it all means...Hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4ZtExHQ-DU
this is without a doubt the most beautiful game I have ever played. Everything from the art to the story to the music was such an incredible experience.
thank you so much for this experience, you two did a wonderfull job. This game is really moving and everything is serving the immersion so well. I am amazed. I'd like to donate to support your work, is there a way ?
Wonderful game and story, the pixel art animation was very evocative. I also really like the second story, though the third was well done also, but a different vibe. I am looking forward to the team's next project.
I was impressed, great work of art. The graphics and animations are simply brilliant (even more considering such a small resolution). And that story! Wow... that could be made into an award winning movie, honestly. Congrats.
Really love the atmosphere of all the stories, and I loved how the second story was made.
The pixel art was quite good was a bit afraid would become a pixel hunt, but never had problems with the items, was a beautiful journey from start to finish, thank you for sharing it
This is extraordinary, it's mesmerizing and beautiful and stunning. The animations were incredible, the immersion was so nice I even shivered a bit in *that* gory scene. It's the best game I have played this year. Congratulations!
First of all thanks for sharing this marvelous masterpiece, the game is exquisite visually, the music is terrific too, I have already recommended it to all my friends and really hope you can release it on steam someday.
I know it's a short processed AVG, however without the in-game menu makes me quite disturbed during the game play. Will you consider adding cancel full-screen options and save/load mechanism in later version?
Hi, I'm afraid I don't know what you mean by "a short processed AVG".
As to the in-game menu, if you read the description right here on this page, you will see a "Controls" section. Press Esc to access the in-game menu, where you can save your game and then load it from the main menu, and Alt+Enter (or use winsetup.exe) to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode.
well i guess that mean my win version of game had a error occurred, cuz when i pressed the Esc button and nothing happened, which got me pretty anxious during the game play...and I can only quit the game by task manager
Hi, Same problem here, hitting Esc just skip the dialogue, in fullscreen or windowed and with each driver. I've also tried to reinstall. I can't save or pause the game. I've only complete the first story and it was great ! I'm eager to see the rest :)
This should be sold full price on Steam. Dark, vital & harrowing, it showcases a level of writing rarely seen in the medium. Congratulations Ms. Hunt and I hope to see the game on Steam soon!
Absolutely breathtaking. The art is gorgeous, the audio compliments the story beautifully. Each character was truly interesting and they all tied together amazingly at the end there. The poor, troubled souls. I don't exactly know what Lady Winterbourne did, but I have my suspicions that in her grief she blamed Lord Socks for the accident and... yeah. Kitty :(
Well, that was just... awesome! Short but top-notch quality, definitely on par with some paid games, and even superior in terms of production value (eg some Wadjet Eye games, although excellent, are lacking visually).
In particular the animation is very expressive and super fluid, and the lighting and effects are really impressive! I'd be super interested to see a making of, how you guys were able to pull these off in AGS.
My favorite chapter was the Lady Winterbourne one, everything really came together for a memorable and emotional experience. Can't wait for the next one ;) !
In my opinion, the narrative about his battle with racism wouldn't be as impactful without it. In fact his story wouldn't have been there without it. He did the ritual because of the racism he received from white doctors. It's like saying To Kill a Mockingbird's use of n words should be removed because it is a horrible slur. The whole book is about racism and I think it's important for people to know how much hatred and violence lead to mental health issues of African Americans in the past and now. The whole game isn't simply about horror. It tackles homophobia, PTSD, depression, and racism problems. It was graphic to purposefully to show the hardships of the people in the past (and even what some experience today).
I get that of course but throughout the game it was made to seem as if they ostracized him based on his ideas, like the rituals and such, rather than race. I'm saying there's better ways to integrate it into the story, throwing in a slur did absolutely nothing except take away from it in my opinion, almost like an excuse to put it in. I've also found that a lot of horror with black characters is centered solely around racism and it doesn't need to be that way. When nonblack people write Black characters, especially when the story is centered around racism, they should at the very least get a sensitivity reader or something. And I just don't see story writing as an excuse for using slurs, I feel like that should go without saying. The whole situation was odd.
Yeah but there's so many better ways they could have done that if they thought it was necessary to the story. Throwing in one slur didn't get the message across like they thought it would.

Hi! The game was made with Adventure Game Studio: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/ags/

Glad to hear! Hope you will be able to create something you'll be proud of. Best of luck!
I'm a simple man I see pixel art I click. I like what I see I download.
Amazing Game ! Do you plan a French translation later? (my english is college level). And one or more DLC ? I really enjoyed this travel.
(I hope you can add Android platform too)...
That game fits in mobile style

Great! I'm looking forward to play it on mac!
Good Game
Everything about this game is amazingly well done

Ah, that's good to know! (Well, actually to be reminded of again...) So I'll try to use itch.
I guess you already know the article, but I came here due to gamingonlinux:
https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2021/03/if-on-a-winters-night-four-travelers-proba...
Good luck with all your endeavours and stay safe!
I do! Actually they offered to help with the Linux release, which is awesome. Fingers crossed and let's see if we can make it work out...
Good news! I can definitely confirm we'll be bringing the Linux version to Steam too :)
Wohoo!
Do you want to tell why this has been an obstacle, given you got a Linux version running all fine and Steam supports Linux?
The problem was setting the appropriate file permissions for the Linux executables. I don't have a Linux machine, but I do have a tiny command line application for Windows that can set the executable bit for the appropriate files and pack the build into a tar.gz archive, thus preserving these permissions. I just finished the second chapter and surprised my wife with clapping. amazing, beautiful storytelling.
as other people have mentioned, I'll gladly pay for this and further experiences.
You can tell these guys got better at this with each story they made. Brilliant.
I wish I could play but my computer would melt through the ground. The game looks so pretty!!!!

Это чертовски интересная игра. Я так и не могу отойти от ее сюжетных поворотов! Они продрали меня до мурашек! Просто великолепно!

Esc does not work during cutscenes or dialogues.
I've tried Esc dozen times but never at the right time...
Thanks for your reply, it was all my fault ! -_-'
Thank you for such a wonderful game. Feels like a maze filled with colors.
Will you have it on Steam? I'd like to help make a Chinese version for this game.
Holy shit this game looks awesome! I would buy this on Steam :D
This should be sold full price on Steam. Dark, vital & harrowing, it showcases a level of writing rarely seen in the medium. Congratulations Ms. Hunt and I hope to see the game on Steam soon!

Do Four Travellers dream of electric Androids?
Wow, what an amazing production. The art left me speechless so many times, and the writing, slow on the uptick, left a lasting impression.
Such beautiful game, both visually and narratively. Enjoyed every second of it!
this is a great game, and well made, but what was up with the racial slur?
I haven't watched/played the game yet so I don't know what slur was said but I'm sure it's because this was set in 1929, when slurs were commonly used
that's not a good reason. You can make horror without racism
It was to make a point about the racism he faced. It was shown in a bad way, the creators are not condoning use of the slur.
Yep, I played the game and that's exactly it
Yeah but there's so many better ways they could have done that if they thought it was necessary to the story. Throwing in one slur didn't get the message across like they thought it would.
This is by far one of the most amazing point and click games I have played recently! Great Job!
